HST & Tax Treatment

Dietetic services provided by a Registered Dietitian are GST/HST-exempt when the statutory conditions are met (rendered to an individual by a practitioner registered to practise dietetics in the province). Services provided under the unregulated title of "nutritionist," along with product sales, supplements, meal plans sold as digital products, courses, and corporate programs, are generally taxable. Most nutrition practices therefore have mixed exempt and taxable revenue, with ITCs restricted on the exempt portion.

Exemptions apply only when the statutory CRA conditions are met; product sales, workshops, and other taxable supplies are tracked and reported separately. As of May 2026.

Regulator

Dietitians & Nutritionists in Ontario are governed by the College of Dietitians of Ontario (CDO) — Registered Dietitians; the title "nutritionist" is unregulated in Ontario, which shapes registration, incorporation, and how your practice can be structured.

Billing & Software

We reconcile the systems you already use: Practice Better, Healthie, Jane App, extended health insurance, private pay, online program / course sales, supplement and product sales.

What We Handle for Dietitians & Nutritionists

Mixed-Supply Bookkeeping

Monthly bookkeeping that cleanly separates exempt dietetic services from taxable products, programs, and courses — reconciled in Practice Better, Healthie, or Jane App against your bank and payment processors.

GST/HST Exempt vs. Taxable Review

We confirm which of your services qualify for the dietitian exemption and which revenue — nutritionist services, supplements, digital products, group programs — is taxable, then handle registration and filing accordingly.

Product & Program Revenue Accounting

For practices selling supplements, meal plans, e-books, or memberships, we set up COGS, inventory, and digital-product tracking so your taxable revenue and HST are reported correctly.

Self-Employed & Incorporation Planning

We prepare your self-employed filing and handle the bookkeeping as your practice and product revenue scale.

Why Wellspring Accounting

We handle the exempt-service / taxable-product split that defines dietetics and nutrition practices — including digital products and online programs.

Practice Better and Healthie are familiar territory; we reconcile subscriptions, packages, and product sales to the penny.

We know the difference the regulated 'Registered Dietitian' title makes for HST and apply it correctly to your revenue.
